Welcome to a new and exciting game I just came up with. How low will it go? In this game we will try to predict the low point of a cars depreciation curve. Maybe we will predict if it will ever be worthy of Travish's articles "You could get this awesome car for the price of this beige car." Enjoy and good luck!

For today's prediction let us look at the stunning Audi R8. Specifically we will be focusing on the bottom of the range V8 model. With an almost pedestrian 420hp some struggle to even call this goliath a supercar. One of the last mid engined cars to be offered with a manual transmission how low with this car plummet in price before it starts to appreciate? Will the manual be worth more than the paddle shifter or vice versa? You decide Oppo and let me know your reasoning and price in the comments below!

Hint: Consider the depreciation of other one time wonders that shacked up the supercar world when they were released.

Probably pretty low. They're such an excellent GT car people daily them and put a lot of miles on them. Someone even parks one on the curb of a busy road near me. An R8 with over 120k miles in just okay condition will probably dip to £10-15k here eventually.

Let's see - a new one is $115,900 before options. The six speed is almost certainly rare, so it might command a premium. Without looking, I'm going to guess that you can pick up a used one in the ... 70s? Guessing the bottom will be in the low 60s before it turns around. Still, no one seems to have much of a hard-on for these compared to say, a Ferrari, an Aston, a Lambo.

There, I played by the rules.

FYI - were I in the market for a semi-supercar, I'd have this very one - the 4.2 is probably Audi's most reliable engine, and I'd rather stir my own gears. The V10 is overpowered, at least from my perspective.

High-$40's to mid-$50's

I'm gonna say they'll bottom out around 40k. there will always be some market for it so it won't be completely worthless.

They've already hit £40k after 7 ish years. There's a manual one with slightly curbed wheels but otherwise good condition and 75k miles for that and a lot of autos with 50-60k miles for the same. Manuals seem to hold value much better.

However, the blades would have to match the body. I do not understand what the designers were thinking.

Here's one near(ish) me - mid 80s, 10K miles, paddles, so I suppose you could get a higher mileage one in the 70s.

These aren't big saloons that depreciate, I think around 50K unless its got lots and lots of miles or totally F'd up.

So that's about 60 grand cash American. This game has many variables. For instance, if you told me there were more R8s sold in the UK than the US, I'd believe you. I saw a lot more supercars in London 5 years ago than I ever see in NYC.

You see a lot of supercars in London and maybe one or two in other bigger cities but otherwise I never see supercars so the proportions are similar.

The UK does have significantly cheaper used cars though, so that will factor in. You can get a nice kitted out 2005 911 for less than £20k.

Considering a good driver condition Ferrari 348 or F355 could be had for about the price of a Lexus ES350, and that the NSX is probably at the bottom of its depreciation curve with high-mileage, good condition examples available around 15k, the R8 will likely drop to around $20k in 2015 dollars, somewhere around 2030 or so.

I was at once pleased and disappointed when I visited London. Lots more supercars, but I was expecting to see lots of strange, old iron. All I saw was a 60s Austin 100 - Jermyn Street near the hotel. Spent 8 days at the Cavendish, which I cannot recommend highly enough.

I'm not a fan of London really. Only been a couple times.

You don't see many classics because the weather means even modern cars lose their wheel arches after ten years. The only two I see regularly is a Morris Minor, that has a few rust holes and is constantly in and out of the local garage and a mk3 Cortina that is religiously cared for and garaged on wet days.

i think these predictions need a time component as well.

and to be closer to perfect, should include some reference to inflation.

it may be that these never get below $50k actual US dollars. but if it happens in 2040 when $50k = $30k today's dollars, the projection won't make sense.

Any photos you might post would be welcome.

We loved London - the GF had stayed outside of the city when she came here on an exchange from Japan, some years back. It was just before Christmas, so there's that, and I even got to go see Hampton Court, which was a desire of mine since taking English history. And stop it with the complaints about the food - got a takeout thin crust pizza that was better than anything I can get on the Upper West Side.

I don't take a lot of photos haha. I have been meaning to post some classics from a museum I went to but this is actually my first day on oppo in about a month.

I just couldn't abide the people when I was in London, much less friendly than where I live. The sightseeing stuff doesn't really interest me too. The last time I was in London was because I went to watch Wimbledon and had a free day before it started.

the panel right behind the door painted to match the rest of the car ruins the entire look of the R8 for me. that was the defining point of the R8 in my mind.

Yeah, it is a major part of the cars design. Without that contrast the character of the car is gone, starts to look like a TT.

V10 might be a little much for the road. The V8 has interchangeable parts with lesser Audi's which for a budget minded individual is a huge plus.

60k really? I was suspecting lower due to the relative lack of prestige compared to most supercars.
